Poetry
I’m afraid I haven’t been shooting lately — over the weekend I’ve been recovering from minor surgery and so I’ve been doing a lot of reading. I’ve never been great at writing poems, though I do enjoy reading them. It turns out that April is National Poetry Month, and so I have a few to share with you.
One of my favorite bloggers, Scot McKnight of Jesus Creed, has been doing a series lately examining one of my favorite poems — Song of Songs. His first post is here; the rest of the entries continue from April 2 on.
Another of my favorite bloggers, Steve McCoy, has been doing a series of poetry posts in honor of the month. The second poem he shared was “The Lanyard,” by Billy Collins. This is a beautiful, poignant tribute to a mother, made quite bittersweet by the fact that Steve was sharing it as he was about to visit his mom for perhaps the last time — she was dying of cancer. I checked back a few days later to read this: “It’s cold here in central Illinois, the day after my Mom’s funeral.” Steve has a small tribute to his mother here.
On a lighter note, I heard a hilarious poem on NPR earlier this week, entitled “The Revenant,” which also turns out to be by Billy Collins. I was unable to find the audio, but I googled it, and found that blogger Corky Alexander has posted it. Warning: This poem begins, “I am the dog you put to sleep…” — if you’ve recently lost a pet, this may be a bit uncomfortable.

Sorry to hear about your surgery, but I suppose it must be a little bit nice to have some reading time. Good for you that you’re finding some poetry to pass the time!
